Nobody is God and the Windows system understands that completely. So there is no reason to panic if you have lost or forgotten the password and can no more access the system. There are ways to change it or reset the password. No again there is always a problem in formatting the operating system and reinstalling it.

Apart from taxing your brain to remember the password the other effective way to find it is restoring a back up for the Windows 2000/XP/2003. But there is some problem with this. It can delete the records of all the other passwords and user names which will give rise to many other troubles.

The intelligent people can try out another trick. They can install another operating system parallely using the other partition of the computer memory. Then try to retrieve the password of the other system. But there are chances of failure of this trick.

Changing the password

You can change the password of the system with the help of the passport network. In order to login to the passport network you will have to visit the address https://accountservices.passport.net and use the MSN ID to do so. First of all locate the page "Account Summary".


There you will get to see the tab "Password reset information" clicking on which you get to see the "Change" tab beside the "Password". The email id will be visible on the "Windows Live ID" box. You need to check out whether this is correct or not. If it is okay then type the former password in the assigned box.

Then put in the password that you wish to make the new password. Make sure you note down the new one or remember it correctly. Then you will have to choose the option called "Make my password expire every 72 days" and then click on the "Save" tab. This is the way to change the forgotten or lost password.

There are tools that can help you change the passwords or recover them. There are Linux boot disks which contain the NTFS software that can come handy to change or recover the passwords including the administrator password. There are certain requirements that your computer needs to meet to make this procedure successful. First of all you need to have a floppy drive and direct access of the system. This is in fact an assured way of recovering the lost passwords.
